The two characters who do manage to stick around for the second half of this play – Ayumi and Hayami – aren't exactly main character material. While a lot of emphasis is put on Hayami's feelings for Maya, there really isn't any reason to get attached to him outside of the fact that he's supportive of Maya's career. As for Ayumi, she goes out of her way to drive away everyone in her life in order to strike out on her own, and because of this turns into a giant, cold-hearted fake of an actress whose sole purpose in the show is to contrast Maya's lovable, heart-felt style of acting. There are other characters and relationships established – two new boys enter her life, who might as well be called “Love Interest 2” and 'Love Interest 3,” and jealous actors continue to do things to hinder Maya's progress – but all of these fail to bring fresh tension to the story.

While most series might suffer when the best part of a show falls limp, Maya and Ayumi's roles and the lengths they go to learn them definitely come through and manage to save the day. Maya playing a doll brings her closer to understanding what it will take to play the non-human lead in The Scarlet Angel, and the journey both girls go through to discover their own way to play Helen keeps you on the edge of your seat. Even the shift to TV brings new ways for both girls to grow, and the more time the series spends focused on their acting roles over the characters around them, the better.

Adding insult to injury is the animation, which looks like they had the Gonzo intern do it on weekends when he had some spare time. The 3D CG in this show is incredibly sloppy; any of it could have been rendered many years ago in some ancient MS-DOS modeling program. The frame rate is all out of whack, contrasting with the poorly done, choppy 2D animation. It's like trying to marry a dead duck with a bowl of week-old cereal. They're both miserable enough on their own, but they're made so much worse by being forced together. Gonzo clearly has problems maintaining a high level of quality and only certain shows can manage a consistently polished look; Zaion was obviously an afterthought during their budget meetings, and the show suffers because of it.

The one bright spot Zaion has to offer (aside from being the only science fiction series to include the name ‘Zaion’ that doesn't feature a ten-minute rave sequence or Laurence Fishburne) is the soundtrack. Both the score and the English dub are very well handled. The music is performed by the irreproachable Kenji Kawai, the mastermind behind the score to Ghost in the Shell. It's haunting, beautiful and minimalist, and is a truck stop of pleasure on the highway of pain. The dub is fantastic; ADV hired a lot of excellent voice talent to drive this show, and the result is a professional, natural-sounding dub laced with some fantastic line readings. The dub almost makes the show worth watching, since… well, no it doesn't. The best acting in the world couldn't save this show from being the megaton bomb that it is. The cast deserve kudos for making lemonade with extremely sour lemons, but it's a shame such talent was wasted for a totally mediocre pile like this.

Avoid Zaion. Unless you're a Gonzo collector and simply must have everything the studio churns out, stay away from this show. Sometimes even the best talent will misfire and wind up releasing something that just isn't special no matter how you frame it. It's a marvel ADV put as much effort in to this title as they did; it comes with a fancy full-color booklet, beautiful packaging and a load of DVD extras. If only they'd put this much in to a show that's actually worth watching. Perhaps they should rename the show Zaion: ~You'll wish you were dead~.

King of Bandit Jing is something of a conundrum. Beneath its polished and abstract artistic trappings lies the basic formula for an everyday shounen action series. Jing is, essentially, the Himura Kenshin or Luffy D. Monkey or Uzamaki Naruto of his series; the best (fighter, pirate, ninja, baker, construction worker) in the world, who goes around fighting for truth, justice, and all that stuff shonen heroes fight for. He even has a spunky talking animal sidekick. While the episodes on volume two do little to stray from the established story formula, King of Bandit Jing has one thing going for it that sets it apart from the vast sea of Kenshin-alikes out there: art direction so unique it defies description.

Jing is worth watching for the visuals alone. It's impossible to name all the different sources this series is pulling from to create its visual style. In episode five alone, you can see visual references to The Beatles' Yellow Submarine, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Salvador Dali's various works and a whole host of others. If that sounds strange for an anime series, it is; frequently the show lapses into fits of nearly anarchic visuals, eschewing common anime technique for a totally chaotic and abstract experience. Jing's adventures in ‘Technicolor Town’, a city washed out in bleeding reds, lime greens and baby blues is a visually stunning artistic device and should not be missed, particularly if you're an art student.

Unfortunately, King of Bandit Jing amounts to a whole lot of flash and very little substance. At its core, Jing still follows the shonen formula to a tee. Each episode is basically an encapsulated adventure, wherein Jing tries to get some unattainable treasure that winds up getting destroyed or left behind for something more important. Everyone learns an important moral lesson (Jing is usually trying to steal something that symbolizes some nebulous human concept that's considered unattainable, like lost love, eternal life, that sort of thing… OK, we get it), Kir hits on the closest woman, and then fires a cannon from his mouth at whatever monster appears near the end of the episode. The end. Yawn. We've seen this sort of thing before, and if it weren't for the visual panache this show displays, there wouldn't be much to write home about.

It's unfortunate, really, that the art director, who obviously had ambitious plans for the series' visual style, got stuck with such tired material. Otherwise, this could have been a classic for the ages to appreciate. The production values are all top-notch, which is a good thing, considering that with such challenging art design, poor animation could have brought this entire production down in flames. Jing and his friends are animated with the utmost of care. Kir, the standout character design who almost looks as though he were ripped from the panels of a Krazy Kat cartoon, seems to suffer from a lower frame rate than the rest of the cast, but it might just be his bizarre design affecting how he moves on screen. Closeups are rendered lovingly by the animators, with flowing hair and shining lips and so forth. The music isn't half-bad either, provided you can take a little rock music and the occasional violin solo.

The dub is passable, if not amazing. Jing's voice is a little sedate, but it's hard to blame the actor, given some of the dialogue he has to work with (“Will we find a paradise of treasure, or a frozen hell? Only the angels know for sure.” Oy.). Kir's actor sounds like he's doing his best Gilbert Gottfried impression, which is both fitting and highly annoying. Competent ADV regulars voice the rest of the (totally inconsequential) cast, and they do a good job bringing the show to life. ADV's dub work has done nothing but improve since the late 90s, and King of Bandit Jing is no exception. If you're a dub fan, give it a shot.

Overall, King of Bandit Jing is a rote exercise in shonen formula action, tied up in an exceptionally pretty package and given a high glossy sheen (and a little whiff of artistic pretension). Don't let that fool you, though; art design students and art fanatics will find a lot to love about the visuals, but little else to keep them in their seats. Shonen fans will probably find something to love, but won't stick around for long. It's an odd little show that doesn't have overwhelming appeal to any particular audience. Here's hoping the storyline improves over the final two volumes.

Kuu Shiratori, like so many girls of limited imagination and will, dreams of a prince. A prince who will one day whisk her away from her aimless life and fill her empty heart with happiness. She believes her day has come when she meets handsome transfer student Kyoshiro Ayanokoji. He's refined, restrained, strong and protective, and most importantly, seems inexplicably fixated on her. That he's accompanied by gorgeous Setsuna, who fights with an oversized mechanical arm and can leech the life from others with a kiss, doesn't seem to faze her, nor does the seemingly unending carnage that the two bring into her life. A battle between Setsuna and a cat-girl with a pair of oversized mechanical feet destroys her school, and her room is demolished when she is kidnapped by a beautiful interloper with a mechanical left arm. Kuu learns that the girls are beings known as Absolute Angels and that Kyoshiro is hell-bent on annihilating them all. Which doesn't bother Kuu too much (though she does worry about how coldly Kyoshiro treats devoted Setsuna) until she discovers her own abominable connection to the Angels, and through it, the true reason for Kyoshiro's interest in her.

Call it Kaishaku's Tsubasa. A grand crossover adventure that references everything from Steel Angel Kurumi to Magical Meow Meow Taruto. However, unlike CLAMP's epic exercise in fan-pandering, the body of work that Shattered Angels draws upon is spectacularly uneven—and not coincidentally, so is Shattered Angels.

Kaishaku's oeuvre ranges from atmospheric but terminally empty fluff like Taruto and UFO Ultramaiden Valkyrie through well-balanced mainstream entertainment like Kurumi right up to the brilliant but genre-entrenched Kannazuki no Miko. Angels is obviously aiming for the high end of that spectrum, so it should come as no surprise that the show it most frequently emulates is Kannazuki; to the extent of recycling most of its cast and re-enlisting director Tetsuya Yanagisawa and screenwriter Sumio Uetake, among others. Those expecting lightning to strike twice, however, should check their expectations at the door. Kannazuki's unabashedly overwrought melodrama was a balancing act of unthinkable delicacy, and Angels ultimately proves incapable of walking the same tightrope.

On occasion Angels does manage moments of bald-faced emotional manipulation to match those of its predecessor. Be sure to stick around until the middle set of episodes—Kuu's reaction to Kyoshiro's apparent intentions is everything that a fan of weepy self-pity could want. But misty-eyed moments do not a series make. Not when they're battling dialogue cheesy enough to clog arteries and plotting so lame that, were it a horse, it would be immediately shot. Kannazuki had similar handicaps, but where it smothered its many faults under a beautifully orchestrated climactic crescendo of triple hanky tear jerking, Angels peaks in the middle, watering its romantic angst down with apocalyptic doom-saying and hideously annoying villainy before ending with an emotional whimper. The leads are too blandly passive to deliver much in the way of emotional punch—Kyoshiro does little more than brood cinematically and Kuu isn't an active participant so much as a quivering lump of girl-flesh upon whom events are inflicted—and their deficiencies are compounded by a script that has neither the courage to feed them through the emotional meat-grinder nor the focus to parlay their romantic travails into heightening emotional tension.

In short, the series fails as a melodrama. And if it isn't a melodrama, then it's merely a maudlin mess with terrible dialogue. (A taste: "The unceasing beat of my heart is a bell heralding good fortune; my flushed cheeks are touched by the flames of passion. This is the best feeling in the world! Hooray, hooray, and hooray!").

Not even the pretty pictures—the power of which, as any four-year-old can tell you, should not be underestimated—can save the series once it devolves into a sappy muddle. Which is a shame, as they are very pretty pictures. The characters are drawn with the same clean, sharp lines as Kannazuki's (no surprise given that Maki Fujii returns to design them), the backgrounds are lush, and the mecha are elegant.

Yanagisawa delivers the visuals with the same lurid panache that he brought to Kannazuki, creating a stylistic continuity that marks the show as a sort of de facto sequel. Scenes repeat themselves—Kuu shopping for an accessory a la Himeko, Kyoshiro thundering to the rescue on horseback (insert laugh of cynical disbelief here) a la Chikane—and the imagery echoes earlier stylistic choices, particularly the nightmare palette of reds and blacks used during some of the darker scenes. His canny use of flashy editing, visual trickery and cheap shortcuts to cover for the occasionally clunky animation remains unchanged, as does his preference for silence over even Mina Kubota's sad, frequently repeated piano themes.

Unfortunately, they are also the English dub's most conspicuous failure. It's the force of personality that Ayako Kawasumi brings to bear on Kaon (and to a lesser extent the vulnerability that Noriko Shitaya brings to Himiko) that allows their scenes to carry the weight they do. Like most of the English cast, Monica Rial and Luci Christian (respectively) are too busy struggling with the stilted garbage that passes for dialogue to invest deeply in their characters. The same can be said for pretty much everyone else, but as none of their scenes worked terribly well in Japanese, the loss is less acutely felt. The addition of Brittney Karbowski's customary energy improves Kuu considerably, but in all honesty that's less a testament to the strength of her performance than it is a testament to the weakness of Sayuri Yahagi's. The real kudos go instead to Jay Hickman, who attacks the show-wrecking role of Kazuya (Kyoshiro's brother) with such scenery-chewing relish that you can't help but revel in the hammy fun he's having. ADV (by way of license-rescuer Funimation) makes the lethal mistake of faithfully preserving the dialogue, even those flowery monstrosities that sound infinitely, agonizingly worse in English.

Less discerning fans of emotional excess may be satisfied with the occasional salty tear that the series squeezes from its watery cast, but anyone with a real taste for ugly, old-school melodrama won't be pleased. And why should they? Successful melodrama is all about shamelessly wallowing in vicarious emotion. Instead Shattered Angels reminds us of everything about the wallowing—the deliberate manipulation, the contrivances, the artificial dialogue—that we should feel ashamed about, while letting us taste but briefly its rewards.

On a cold, wet Thursday night in New York City, members of the press and ticket contest winners received the honor of seeing the very first screening of the new Pioneer dub of AKIRA.

An hour before the first screening, Pioneer moved several motorcycles in front of the AMC Empire 25. Although these motorcycles were radically different than Kaneda's bike in AKIRA, they received incredible amounts of attention from onlookers as well as AKIRA attendees.

Last anime by late director Umanosuke Iida with Cowboy Bebop, Patlabor designers

The March issue of Kadokawa Shoten's Gundam Ace magazine is revealing on Wednesday that the previously anounced Towa no Quon project will be a six-part theatrical anime film series that will open in five Japanese cities on June 18. The anime studio BONES is producing Towa no Quon as the last anime of Umanosuke Iida (Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team, Hellsing), the director who passed away last November.

The story follows a boy named Quon and others who suddenly wake up with supernatural powers. Gundam Ace had previously presented several sketches that Iida himself drew of an alternate-dimension gate and other elements.

Takeshi Mori (Otaku no Video, Gunsmith Cats, Vandread) is serving as the "collaborative director" in Iida's place, and Saizo Nemoto (Tokyo Majin Gakuen Kenpucho: Tou 2nd Act, Shangri-La script writer) is supervising the scripts.

Toshihiro Kawamoto (Gundam 0083, Cowboy Bebop, Wolf's Rain) is designing the characters and overseeing the animation process. Yutaka Izubuchi (Gundam: Char's Counterattack, Gundam 0080, Patlabor) is credited for the concept designs, while his frequent collaborator Shingo Takeba (Gasaraki, RahXephon, Patlabor WXIII) is also credited for "design works."

The first film will play in Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, Sapporo, and Fukuoka. More details will be provided in future issues of Gundam Ace, and the official website will open at towanoquon.com.

Pioneer did a splendid job on the second volume of "The Adventures of Mini-Goddess: the Belldandy Files." The packaging was done nicely, with cute extras, and large, clear subtitles that were easy to read. Of course, the good job done on this disc was aided tremendously by the episodes themselves. Produced for the purpose to please fans and make people laugh, the episodes hit their goal with room to spare. Ah! Megami-sama fans will be glad for the chance to see their favorite characters once again. Others will be glad for the chance to experience a light-hearted show guaranteed to make just about everybody smiles. Regardless of who you are, though, you should pick up this DVD. With this in the DVD player, it's virtually impossible to have a bad day.

Alas, one aspect of Voices is far from perfect, but it's not Makoto Shinkai's fault. When ADV began the dubbing process, they handed the job to Steven Foster, an anime enthusiast with a reputation for adapting (instead of translating) the script for a series. The trend continues here, as Foster carelessly omits critical details, completely rewrites some scenes, misinterprets emotions, and even adds new dialogue where the original track had silence. It doesn't ruin the show, but it certainly knocks the charm down a few levels.

The flaw in Mr. Hata's writing is his bad tendency to change perspectives with his explanatory comments, sometimes within the same page. As he himself notes in the very conversationally-written character profiles at the end (which seem to contain spoilers for future volumes, so be forewarned), he also makes a bad error on where Tama comes from. His writing is generally breezy and fun, though, which more than compensates for the minor deficiencies.

Unlike his writing, Mr. Hata's artwork doesn't cut any new ground, instead opting for a very common manga artistic style, complete with standard gimmicks for superdeformed characters. The only distinctive element is eyes often drawn completely black, as one might see in early American cartoons. Character designs are also typical, although Hayate comes off looking cutesy and almost girly and Nagi is occasionally drawn in dress and poses with lolicon leanings, especially on some of the Episode opening pages. Action scenes are handled well and the overall caliber of the artistry is a definite step above average. Though the title is rated Teen, there's only a little bit of blood and a meager amount of nudity-free fan service.

An anime adaptation of Kôji Kumeta's Katteni Kaizō gag manga has been green-lit. Akiyuki Shinbo will direct the anime at the studio SHAFT as he did for the anime of Kumeta's Sayonara Zetsubō Sensei manga.

In the story, Kaizō Katsu is a former student of the "Genius Cram School" ("Tensai Juku") but his childhood friend Umi Natori accidentally turned him into an idiot (and possibly insane) by injuring his head. Kaizō's crazy ideas caused an explosion that forced the Genius Cram School to shut down. Even years later when Kaizō is in high school, his former classmates have come looking for payback. So, Kaizō, Umi, and the other members of their high school science club are shown in the most surreal situations.

The manga ran in Shogakukan's Weekly Shonen Sunday magazine from 1998 to 2004. The 26 original volumes are being recompiled into 14 volumes for a new reprint edition to mark Kumeta's 20th anniversary as a manga creator.

In a related development, the Sayonara, Zetsubou-Sensei anime franchise is getting three Blu-ray boxes between March and July.

The official website for the anime films based on Gosho Aoyama's Detective Conan manga has confirmed that the 15th film, Detective Conan: Quarter of Silence, will open in Japan on April 16, 2011. The story begins with a threat against the Tokyo governor, but Conan's quick thinking prevents any fatalities when a subway tunnel is blown up. Conan learns there may be a connection to a village that was relocated for the construction of a dam, and he races to stop the criminal before the next attack.

The show wouldn't be quite so miserable if the design wasn't as poorly handled as it is. The potential for coolness is certainly here, and the basic human character designs are rock solid, even if they are a tad on the generic side. Although the concept of a young girl being the ultimate war machine has been done more than a few times before, it's always interesting to see what the designers come up with. Not in Zaion's case. Ai turns in to a poorly-rendered CG version of Earth Girl Arjuna, complete with big, flat, funny-looking hands that look like they're straight out of a Rodney Greenblat video game. The M34 virus first mutates people into strange rock-looking creatures, which isn't too awful. Once the virus starts changing, however, the monsters turn in to giant lumps of Silly Putty with faces and arms. The NOA soldiers look like something straight out of a sentai show, complete with matching biomechanical outfits that are all outfitted with faceless masks and breeding hips. Imagine watching a squad of Power Rangers fight a big blob of Silly Putty, and you've got Zaion.

The flakiest of moments is, of course, the business with the tail that has been much-speculated-about ever since images of the cover were first revealed months ago. Alita has always been a satisfying balance between cute and totally bad-ass, but that tail tips the scales towards the former despite her combat application of it. But why stop at that, Kishiro? Where are the ears and more paw-like hands to give her the full complement? Really, why not go all the way if you are going to insist on designing something so ridiculous?

The generally ho-hum progression of the story is just as much of a concern. Admittedly, Alita does have a couple of fantastic scenes where she demonstrates to Mbadi that even he cannot directly mess with her anymore, and she does showcase some nifty moves, but beyond those scenes she reverts to retread listlessness and “I look forward to fighting you at full strength” comments – when she is on the page at all, that is. After being entirely absent from the last volume, she only gets the star treatment in less than half of this one, with Mbadi and Toji both having enlightening flashback chapters and the karate free-for-all taking up much of the volume's later stages. Alita's newly-empowered form also smacks of a Dragon Ball Z-like power escalation (although it has been awhile since Alita upped her power level) and any mention of the reason why Alita was originally doing all of this – i.e. to recover Lou's brain chip – is conspicuously absent. Has Kishiro given up on this plot thread?

In the plus column, Alita getting the better of Mbadi for once is highly satisfying and her more light-hearted side is back in play after a long period of near-complete seriousness. Kishiro continues his unmatched talent for inventively grotesque applications of bioengineering and creative cyborg designs, although some of the animal themes he uses this time are just ridiculous, as are some of the karate fighter names. The two pages of four-panel “NG Theater” strips at the end are also quite funny.

Although Kishiro is still among the best in the business on technical and artistic fronts, his new renderings for Alita seem just a little off in style and refinement compared to earlier efforts. He still knows how to execute fight scenes with the best of them, though, and never fails to make his characters distinctive and interesting even when they are completely ridiculous. The color pictures of Alita on the front and back covers are especially sharp despite the incongruous tail.

Viz Media continues to do a fine job of releasing the title, heading each volume with an up-to-date story summary and closing out each one with the four-panel strips. As always, sound effects are fully translated.

The other problem here is that the end of this volume gives no indication when the next one might come out. Volume 13 has apparently been out in Japan for a few months now but there has been no clear indication on a possible English release date, suggesting that another long gap between volumes could be facing fans of the series. Unlike at many previous points in the series, though, fans are unlikely to be waiting impatiently this time. There is still more story to tell here, but not the sense of excitement and anticipation seen in previous volumes; in fact, the final pages of this one are decidedly lackluster. Watching this series fall into decline is saddening, so fans can only hope that Kishiro will either rediscover his enthusiasm or else find a way to soon and properly bring his onetime masterpiece to a fitting conclusion.

The central Asian country of Uddiyana has for years been wracked by civil war and strife, problems which U.N. military intervention has had difficulty curtailing. A fragile cease fire which could lead to a peace treaty between the government and insurgent groups becomes embodied in an internationally-renown photograph of a flag taken by Saeko Shirasu, an up-and-coming Japanese photojournalist, which leads the people of Uddiyana to take the flag as a symbol of hope. That complicates matters when the featured flag, which was to be displayed at the treaty signing, gets stolen by an insurgent group determined to scuttle the peace process. To recover the flag before word of its theft spreads, the U.N. establishes the secret military unit dubbed SDC, which is to use cutting-edge HAVWC technology (i.e. a bipedal mobile platform) to do the job, and because she took the famous photo, Saeko is called upon to document the effort. Meanwhile, her mentor photographer Keiichi Akagi, who is not involved with the SDC or even aware of what's going on, tries to investigate events in Subasci, Uddiyana's capital.

The old adage “a picture is worth a thousand words” sometimes underestimates the ability of photos to capture the mood and spirit of a moment, or to evoke reactions in its viewers. Honoka's adventures are rendered in crisp, clean lines, with just the right amount of action to keep fans happy. At times, individual scenes get a little too cluttered with speedlines, but the well-spaced paneling makes it easy to follow what's going on. Also easy to follow are the character designs: sure, they're all victims of the generic big-eyes-and-sharp-hair style, but each one is distinctly different, and there's no mistaking Honoka or the secondary characters for anyone else. The backgrounds are a tad more ordinary, though: all the usual post-apocalyptic badlands clichés are in play here, including endless dunes, weather-beaten towns, and occasional pockets of metropolitan civilization. Put all together, this is a visual package that's well-polished and pleasant to look at, although lacking in innovation.

The overly simple dialogue might be another reason why this series' storytelling doesn't satisfy: it's hard to take the characters seriously when they express their thoughts in short grade-school sentences. Consider Honoka's lines from Chapter 1, for example: "In the outlands, there is an outland way of living." (Oh really? Thank you, Captain Obvious!) It gets a little better once there's action and adventure in between the dialogue, but most of the writing still feels dumbed-down. If you can accept those flaws, however, this volume is decent enough: the lead character is likable, she gets to do a whole lot of different things, and she shows off her battle skills in a number of well-polished scenes. A real sense of renewal accompanies Vampire Knight's leap forward in time. The events at Cross Academy have played themselves out, the setting has changed, and everyone has evolved, seriously rearranging the relationship map. The Rido arc marked the end of the old Vampire Knight, and the new Vampire Knight stands on the cusp of a sophistication of its emotional and narrative topography that could, if played right, be downright stunning.

On one side is Zero, the rising star of the Hunter Association; on the other is Kaname, the new ruler of the vampires; and somewhere in between is Yuki, the recently minted vampire princess. The symmetry of Knight's new set-up lends it a clean, classical feel; something that the sometimes muddled Cross Academy material lacked. Tensions emerge effortlessly from the antagonistic relations of its leads, and just as effortlessly suggest a range of tragic potentialities. It has direction, purpose, and no shortage of darkness to sculpt gothic angst from. In short, it's a good one. And Matsuri Hino uses it well. There's an inevitability to the progression of events, a faintly mythic quality to the lived-in plotting and rigorously-structured chains of affection and hatred. At its best this volume feels like genuine Romantic fiction, like something Alexandre Dumas might have written had he had a thing for pretty boys and diseased love. Of course, at its worst, when Hino's overwrought language and romantic hyperbole get the better of it, it feels like something a high-school girl might scribble on the inner cover of a notebook. But that's just Vampire Knight for you.

It isn't just Knight's structuring that has matured; neither the characters nor their bonds are the same as those that began the series, or even that finished out the last volume. Yuki, older and wiser, embraces her decision and its consequences, surrendering herself to her feelings for Kaname even as she acknowledges those she has for Zero. Kaname devotes himself to acclimating Yuki to her eternal life and shaping the world, by any means, to accommodate her. They are, in a angst-warped kind of way, a perfect couple. Which would make them boring—that is, if it weren't for the specter cast over them by the radically altered third leg of their love triangle. Zero was by far the most cruelly victimized and deeply twisted by Kaname's scheme to destroy Rido, and not coincidentally, he emerged from the fray the most interesting character. Consumed by hatred and driven by a need, born of past failures, to protect the weak, he comes to completely embody the hard-line anti-vampire stance that Cross Academy once stood against. He slips into the role of ice-cold enforcer with disturbing ease, and makes no bones about his homicidal intentions towards Yuki and Kaname. Which makes him, for now at least, both Vampire Knight's hero and its villain. How's that for renewal?

Hino has long since mastered such essential skills as how to draw intense, emotive eyes, luscious bishonen, sensuous lips, and gorgeous, flowing hair. She's also a past master of the use of shadow and screen tone and panel arrangement in summoning palls of wrenching angst and chilly gusts of gothic atmosphere. Her costumes are impeccably cool (Zero favors John Woo overcoats) and her characters distinct yet uniformly beautiful. Her ability to weave intricate webs of elegant melodrama with mere paper and pen is duly impressive, and has been for ages now. But she has struggled all along with the more cinematic aspects of her art. Spatial relations were often muddied by a dearth of backgrounds and ill-arranged paneling, and complex actions and simulated cinematic trickery were beyond the scope of her skills. The Rido arc's bravura action climax changed that some, and she's brought its lessons with her into this volume. Zero's reintroduction is a bit of slo-mo showboating worthy of, well, John Woo, and the volume's two fated reunions are orchestrated with such operatic clarity that they leave no doubt about Hino's expanded stylistic repertoire.

By now Viz's Vampire Knight books should be thoroughly familiar: English-replaced sound effects, solid construction, and a little stiffness in the dialogue that may or may not be due to difficulties in translating Hino's flowery language. Extras after the book proper include a page of Vampire Knight gag-manga and a bonus drawing along with the usual translations of Hino's character names.

Vampire Knight's new chapter encounters its share of problems. Kaname and Yuki's love scenes, each a typically extreme exercise in poetic excess and lachrymose abandon, feel weak and a little forced nestled next to Zero's tightly controlled fury and increasingly ambiguous behavior; a good number of previously major supporting players get short shrift; and the new additions to the cast have little do but lurk menacingly as Yuki, Kaname and Zero's relationships restructure themselves. But in the balance Knight's newest turn is nothing but good. This is no rote continuation; it's the beginning of something new, something grand, something—in patented Vampire Knight style—seriously screwed-up.

Knowing that there's no space for many complexities and side characters, Tamura takes the small core of characters in each story and gives them strong, distinctive personalities. Ozeki in the first story, for example, isn't just a generic insecure schoolgirl--she's hopelessly antisocial but with a desire to make something of herself. Shiki in the third story is a detestable bastard from the very first scene, which makes his comeuppance all the more satisfying. Tamura also avoids secondary plotlines by focusing on a linear story that charges purposefully towards its inevitable (but always subtle) conclusion. "The Eye of the Needle" is incredibly good at this, becoming a page-turning thriller as Shiki's stalker becomes more and more extreme--she clogs up his fax machine, sends him threatening mail, and even leaves a box of roaches at his door. Story elements like these affect both the character and the reader with their dramatic impact.

The only real weakness in Wild Com is "The Beasts of June," which gets lost in a confusing metaphor about dragonflies and contains two main characters that aren't as emotionally forceful as the ones in the other stories. The impact at the end, however, is still stronger than most other manga can muster in an entire story arc. Other artists may excel in artwork or dialog, but Yumi Tamura has the one talent that can make up for everything else: storytelling.

The "Tam-Tam Disjointed Theatre" omake in the back of the manga is a lighthearted relief from the emotionally draining main stories, and lets things finish on a positive note (especially since "The Eye of the Needle" is the most chilling tale in the manga). The cartoony explorations of psychic powers prove that Tamura is just as comfortable with offbeat comedy as with the intense drama of the previous 170+ pages, and finally there are some personal notes that present her perspective on each of the three stories.

It takes a particularly good manga to give me goosebumps of awe, and Wild Com is the first title in a long while to accomplish that. Yumi Tamura proves that quality manga doesn't have to ride on gimmicky ideas or long-running plotlines--a dramatic, well-polished short story with equally dramatic visuals can be just as satisfying. For those who find themselves invested in too many series already, or afraid of starting one that will run forever, Wild Com provides relief by not connecting to any subsequent volumes. Short stories may continue to play second fiddle to multi-volume series in manga, but they're far from being a lost art.

This doesn't mean that the other aspects of Wild Com are sub-par, however: Tamura's expressive artwork is definitely strong enough to back up her gripping stories. The visual style of this book is probably what prompted Viz to label it as shoujo, but it just happens to be the outward dressing for stories that go well beyond teen-angst clichés or preening fantasyland pretty boys. The character designs are most notable for the large, melancholy eyes that are more creepy than cute and provide a lot of the emotional depth in close-up panels. The backgrounds, like any typical shoujo work, tend to be a sparsely rendered afterthought, although there is the occasional dynamic angle. What really helps the storytelling is the mostly rectangular panel layout, which frames the loose-lined artwork and makes it easy to follow the narrative rather than getting lost in sakura petals and screentones.

Although the dialogue in Wild Com doesn't rise far above typical conversation, there's a poetic rhythm in the way the phrases are spaced out. This becomes even more evident in the interior monologues, which are genuine glances into a character's personality rather than the self-indulgent angstfests that they usually are. The translation and adaptation make things clear without being too dry--there are points where things get confusing, like the meandering dragonfly metaphor in "The Beasts of June"--but overall, the writing in this manga serves the story without hindering or overshadowing it.

If a manga omnibus costs the same as buying the volumes individually, is it still worth buying? That may be the only deep philosophical question to come out of Witchblade: Takeru, which is heavy on the boobs and bloodshed but offers little in the way of story. Oh, sure, there are events that lead to other events that eventually culminate in one big final event, but swap it with any other action-adventure-supernatural plotline and nobody would notice the difference. The only unique trait of this short series, it seems, is its basis on an American comic franchise—as opposed to other Japanese manga where the authors have to come up with their uninspired dreck all by themselves. As we learn from these 400-odd pages, gratuitous sex and violence is indeed a universal language.

If there is anything this title deserves praise for, it's for at least getting the basis of the Witchblade mythos correct. Yes, there is a fearsome supernatural weapon that has granted its power to certain women throughout the course of history. And that's about the point where this series veers off from the original, spewing clichés left and right and hoping that the combination of grotesquerie and softcore erotica will distract readers from its storywise deficiencies. Surely no one will be surprised to learn that the newest bearer of the Witchblade is a stereotypical Japanese schoolgirl, and that her first mission is to fend off the demons threatening her family, and that her very devoted platonic male friend Kou suddenly finds himself in a crisis of conscience because he may have to kill her to save her. Please, feel free to point out if there's anything here that isn't copied from dozens of other action-adventure demon-hunting stories. No? Didn't think so.

Sacrifices were made, however, to make it possible. Getting to and from all of those showdowns requires characters to traverse forest, desert and marsh in ridiculously abbreviated time-frames (Maka is the space-warp master, traveling through all three and back again in less time than it takes the DWMA to breach Arachne's fortress), and not every plotline is juggled with equal skill. Death the Kid's search for his dad's magical tools badly disrupts the series' flow, and Black Star's duel with Mifune is so poorly integrated that it feels entirely superfluous. The big sacrifice, though, is the humor—particularly the self-aware portion of it. The show doesn't take itself entirely seriously—there's some business with a giant mechanized flyswatter that makes that pretty explicit—but neither is this the flip, self-referential lark it once was. The battles with Medusa, Arachnophobia, and the Kishin in particular are deadly serious, and being serious, find it quite imperative that foes partake in tedious standoffs during which intellectual smack is talked about each other's ideals. With Kiyohiko Azuma maturing as an artist, his mode of expression has become more refined in these later volumes, progressing from kid-centric sketch comedy to a warm, nostalgic portrayal of childhood—the funny times, the frustrating times, the relaxing times, and the uplifting, unforgettable times that stay with you for as long as you live. This volume continues in that strange mode for a couple more chapters, but good things come to those who wait—and when the older boys finally stop Mitsui in his tracks, that's when the story makes a masterful turnaround. Then again, maybe Inoue was just messing the whole time, digging into pure shônen cliché before pulling out the next major story development: a flashback that shines the spotlight on some of the major supporting characters, while also explaining what the fight was all about in the first place. Still, some would say that Slam Dunk's return to form can be explained much more simply: it's about basketball again. Which is not to say that the fistfight wasn't fun—Hanamichi's retaliatory beatdown in this volume is nothing short of majestic—but when the title of the manga refers to the most exciting play in the game, it ought to be about the actual game. In fact, the basketball content is a refreshing departure from the typical "scrimmage match, plus Hanamichi screwing around for 4 quarters" formula; the flashback takes us to the days when Akagi was all size and no skills (watch him do his best Shaq impression at the free-throw line), while also showcasing Mitsui's flawless shooting style, and pitting the two young stars against each other in a matchup of brawn versus bravado.

It is, however, a very pretty trudge through very familiar territory. Director Junji Nishimura is too grizzled a veteran to let poor characterization or uneven writing hobble his visual instincts. Nishimura salts the series liberally with memorable images: a silk-smooth CGI-enhanced basketball game for instance, or Noe delivering a monologue while holding a desperate Jibeta up to the setting sun. And copped from Kanon though it may be, the series' atmosphere, built of dusky light and quietly shifting seasons and hauntingly empty interiors, is undeniably beautiful. When Shinichiro or Hiromi is out and about, chewing up time that would be better spent on characters we actually care about, at the very least one can occupy themselves admiring the floating leaves, drifting snow or flurries of translucent cherry petals.

At the very least, those brief jolts of heartbreak aren't enough to fully counteract its closet full of shortcomings, or to make you forget—except momentarily—that it is trudging through very familiar territory.

Mount Fuji Shizuoka Airport is a small airport that was opened in June 2009 to serve the area between Nagoya's Central Japan Airport and Tokyo's Haneda Airport. The airport is located between Shizuoka Prefecture's two main cities, Hamamatsu and Shizuoka, and is named after the prefecture's most famous landmark, Mount Fuji, which is located 80 kilometers away.

Shizuoka Airport is conveniently located near the expressway, while the Tokaido Shinkansen passes directly below it. However, there are currently no plans to build a new station for easy train access to the airport. Instead, access by public transportation is provided by buses (see details below).

ANA and Fuji Dream Airlines, a new airline based in Shizuoka, are operating flights to six domestic destinations: Sapporo, Fukuoka, Okinawa (Naha), Kanazawa (Komatsu), Kumamoto and Kagoshima.

Furthermore, there are regular international flights to Shanghai and Seoul, as well as a few charter flights.

How to get there
Mount Fuji Shizuoka Airport is accessible by bus from Shizuoka (55 minutes, 1000 yen) and Hamamatsu (2 hours, 1200 yen, one transfer along the way). Buses also connect the airport with Kakegawa Station, the closest station along the Tokaido Shinkansen (35, minutes, 700 yen) and with Shimada and Kikugawa Stations, the closest stations along the JR Tokaido Line (25 minutes, 500 yen).

Furthermore, there is one daily bus from the airport to the Fuji Five Lake region at the base of Mount Fuji (3.5 hours, 3200 yen).

Several rental car outlets are located at the airport. The closest interchange along the Tomei Expressway is only five kilometers away.

Sarai-ya Goyou Episode 6 plot story Akitsu Masanosuke is a timid ronin on his way to Edo from the countryside when he accidentally encounters a playboy named Yaichi, who asks him to be his bodyguard. But it turns out that Yaichi is actually the leader of a group of bandits called the "Five Leaves," and he's hoping that Masanosuke will join them. Japanese are known for their delicate carving. Netsuke is basically miniature sculptures which have now become a collectable item. Netsuke was a carved piece on the cord of the (sagemono) or a hanging compartment, that was kept tight by the cord bead or 'ojime', placed between the 'inro' and the netsuke. The inro hanged from the kimono sash (obi) and the netsuke was placed below the sash, holding the Sagemono in its place.

They used to have a practical purpose of being a toggle which helped secure things that were hanged from the kimono. In the beginning, the netsuke was made of wood, but later on more expensive materials came into being and you can find old netsuke crafted out of amber, bone, antlers, ivory both elephant and marine with exotic precious stone inlays and carvings. Netsuke was in vogue from the 17th to the early part of the 19th century but after the Meiji Restoration, it gradually disappeared after Western clothes came into focus.

There are four types of netsuke basically: Katabori (common and compact), Manju (flat resembling a button), Sashi (long and thin) and Kagamibuta (lid and bowl). Collectors prefer the different styles of netsuke specially the decorative mask netsuke which were miniature replicas of the masks worn in the popular plays of Noh and Kyogen. Another popular choice is the carved human figure (katabori) and Kagamibuta, comprising of a set of netsuke which have a metal lid and bowl, handcrafted from ivory. A special name 'Netsukeshi' was given to the carvers of netsuke, whose background was a sculptor and an artist.

Although the popularity of collecting netsuke has gained popularity over the past few years, fakes are often sold to those who do not have a keen eye to spot the difference. In case, you plan to buy an original netsuke, it is best to consult someone who has been in the field of art collection or is an authority on the subject. There are many sites that sell classic reproductions of these also which may not be valued on their antiquity but are prized due to their craftsmanship.

Many artists still carry the knowledge of crafting netsuke that had been passed generation to generation, but sell them as modern version as a curio. You can search online and get many good deals on intricate sculpted netsuke that might hold your attention due to the sheer beauty of the carving.

The official website for the Noitamina television anime adaptation of Natsume Ono's House of Five Leaves (Sarai-ya Goyou) manga also began streaming a promotional video on Monday. As was the case for Moyashimon's video, the cast members Daisuke Namikawa and Takahiro Sakurai made personal appearances at Noitamina's Sunday press conference to introduce the House of Five Leaves anime and present this promotional video. The manga follows the lives of the House of Five Leaves gang members in Edo-era Japan during the height of the shōgun's rule. In particular, the masterless samurai (rōnin) Akitsu Masanosuke becomes the bodyguard of the gang's charismatic leader Yaichi. The anime premieres in Japan on April 15.

We've been told aging is natural, so why do so many people dread it? What do you think of when you hear the words 'getting older' or 'old age pensioner'? Is aging, as we perceive it inevitable? It needn't be so.

No one has found a magic potion as yet, over the centuries so much energy and research has gone into the pursuit of the 'fountain of youth' but in recent years much light has been shed on the subject. Thanks to all this effort we now know there is so much we can do to slow down the aging process. The lifestyle you choose can have a profound effect on enhancing or accelerating the degenerative process.

Off-course aging is inevitable but is so much suffering inevitable? Around 85 per cent of diseases are degenerative illnesses, the other 15 per cent are genetic, infectious or trauma. So what causes our body to fall into rapid decline? It never fails to make me wonder why we look after our cars better than we look after ourselves. Yet we can go out anytime and buy a new one when we've out lived the old one. It's not quite as easy for us to trade-in our old bodies for a new one. I can hear you saying "there are bits we can have replaced", yes there are, such as a new hip joint, new heart or just the valves, new liver or new blood from a transfusion, and so much more.

Going back to our car, we don't generally wait for our car to break down, we have it serviced regularly making sure it has very thing it needs to perform its daily task well. 'Well' being the operative word, not 'just spluttering a long'. We should treat ourselves with the same respect, giving our bodies everything it needs to perform its daily task well. Most people will wait until their body breaks down.

So back to the point, why do our bodies fall into decline? Researchers have several theories such as the Hayflick Limit Theory - each cell contains a program that limits the number of divisions a cell may divide before it dies. Another theory is the Waste Accumulation Theory - our cells simply produce more waste than they are capable of eliminating, all helped along by our typical diets and life-styles. As waste and toxins builds up in the cell, it accumulates and eventually the cell drowns in its own toxic waste.

The other main theory is the free-radical theory, first developed as much as 50 or more years ago, offering an explanation that helps us to understand degenerative disease, accelerated aging, and prevention or at the very least slowing down its onset for much later in life. Free-radicals roam about trying to break up stable pairs of molecules by stealing their partners. A little like a bachelor breaking up stable married couples. Once the free-radical manages to steal a partner, the other molecule is now unpaired, unstable and is now a free-radical on the hunt, a bachelor now themselves. This reaction is a little like the domino effect setting off a chain reaction of a cell-damaging viscous circle.

The most attention is focused on the oxygen-based free-radicals called oxy-radicals. It is these tiny molecules that are responsible for the free-radical damage we know as oxidative stress that contribute to degenerative diseases much in the same way they rust metal. We slow down this process by coating the metal with a protective covering, helping to prevent oxygen and moisture from doing its worst, by applying a primer and then a coat of paint we effectively extend the life of the metal. By protecting the metal from free-radials we can extend the life of the metal by many years.

There are things we can do to protect and slow down our own deterioration. We can slow down our own rusting process, however most people choose a lifestyle that speeds up this process.

Having said all of this not all free-radicals are all bad, we do some free-radical activity to help fight infections from bacteria and viruses. These free-radical bachelors are also involved in the production of vital substances such as prostaglandins, hormone-like substances vital to many processes of the body. Our bodies also release free-radicals during energy production like periods of strenuous exercise, during prolonged periods of stress, excitement, anger or during an infection.

However, the vast majority of our oxidative damage in our body comes mostly from excess free-radicals found in our environment and the food we choose rather than those produced within our bodies as a natural by-product of our own metabolism. Air pollution, tobacco smoke, toxic waste, herbicides, pesticides, chemicals in cosmetics or cleaning products, preservatives, additives in processed foods and processed oils all form free-radicals. Then add these factors to too many negative thoughts you have a recipe for accelerated aging and damage. So what can we do to protect yourself from this destruction? What can we do to equip our bodies with the right tools to cope with all this destruction?

Most of us have now heard of anti-oxidants, they prevent or slow down the damage caused by free-radicals. These days our environment places a tremendous strain on our bodies over which we have little choice and often no control. However, we do have a choice over whether to consume anti-oxidants or free-radicals, directly speeding up or slowing down our aging process. Antioxidants act a bit like Kamikaze pilots they sacrifice themselves by donating one of their own electrons. Certain vitamins and minerals, plant compounds are very effective anti-oxidants protecting us from rusting so to speak. Researchers are telling us over and over again how the lack of antioxidants are contributing to degenerative diseases like heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, eye problems, pain and needless suffering as we age.

The goal is to look at health care as a method of promoting wellness rather than treating illness, this is two completely different things. Prevention is easier and less expensive than waiting to treat a disease. People often say to me in our clinic when discussing lifestyle changes, 'I don't want to live to 110'. I am not saying for one minute that making lifestyle changes will make you live for a very long time. It's the quality of life that is so important and we owe it to ourselves to be as happy and as healthy as possible. Be positive and play an active role in your own health.

What does prevention mean to you? In conversations I have with people about their health, they tell me they are really healthy. So how does one define healthy? Is healthy merely an absence of a named disease? In other words your Doctor has not given you a label, angina or diabetes, a named disease, so therefore you must be healthy. I hear things like - I have my annual check-ups and various tests every year and I am told I am 100% okay. What does this mean 100% okay?

I observe people - they eat and drink all sorts of unhealthy foods and drinks, are not active, are often over weight and put up with many physical annoyances. Annoyances like aches and pains, headaches, migraines, blocked nose, painful digestive problems, asthma, insomnia, fatigue, various skin conditions like eczema, hypoglycaemia, and more. But would definitely consider themselves' healthy. Many people I know consider taking conventional tests as their 'preventative' measure/medicine.

To me this is like 'Russian roulette' you are pulling the trigger until one day, bang! The tests, then one day suddenly, out of the blue come up with some 'negative result'- you've taken the bullet! Just like that. Suddenly you have heart disease or diabetes or suddenly you have a thyroid that has stopped working properly. So why should you worry if the tests keep showing you are in the clear this time, the barrel was empty this time? In truth you don't just wake up one day with a thyroid problem or a heart disease problem. It has taken many, many years to develop. Few tests give you any indication of things in their very early stages, for instance a thyroid that is struggling. The tests will keep showing your thyroid is absolutely fine. Then when 'broken' so to speak you are told your thyroid is under-active and you need medication, what happened in the interim, the time leading up to this problem? Off-course there are always exceptions, where a thyroid could have a problem overnight - for instance in a case of a car accident, where whip lash can dramatically affect the thyroid function.

It is true some cancers can be detected in their early stages of development, and that is wonderful. However, most research shows time and time again that a really healthy lifestyle can cut down our chances of suffering cancer in the first place. And that a typical lifestyle encourages the on-set of cancer. Here is one example - you may decide to take 'hormone replacement estrogens' and as a 'preventative measure' so to speak take an annual mammogram, because artificial oestrogen is known to increase your chances of breast cancer.

Many people consider these mammograms, as their preventative measure, wait and see.

To me prevention is not even considering taking something that would encourage cancer in the first place but to find herbs, supplements and a change in lifestyle to minimise the natural transition and generally make you healthier in the long run improving your quality of life.

Bearing in mind the menopause is natural even though the medical profession have declared it a disease. Eat, drink and be merry, after all the tests keep telling you that you are 100%.

Or maybe you think you are one of those rare people who can cheat that lifestyle of yours and not pay the consequences eventually. Many of the common diseases we are suffering in the developed Western world are preventable in a truly preventable sense, with changes in lifestyles. Change your lifestyle now don't wait until it is serious (a negative test result), before you change things. Get healthy now.

This is where alternative medicine differs from conventional medicine. We see things differently health is not just the absence of a disease, but a real state of wellbeing and vitality. We see all symptoms and signs as significant (no matter how small) as they all add up to reveal a picture about your state - which organs and systems are struggling, what deficiencies, and imbalance you might have.

I would like to make it clear it is important to have tests, but just because your tests reveal everything is okay, don't be complacent remember chronic conditions take years to develop most often undetected until it is well advanced.

Scientific evidence backs up the idea that the type of diet we choose has a very deep and fundamental impact on the way we age, this has far deeper more reaching consequences than the genes we have inherited. We can't choose our genes but we can choose our lifestyles. What does this mean? People tell me they have several close family members who are diabetic. So they have the idea that they have no say in their own destiny, that they too will eventually be diabetic. Yet I see them eat loads of refined carbohydrates - dough-nut, cookies, bread, pancakes, pasta, chocolate, sugary foods, sodas, coffees, with next to no fresh food what so ever. Their diet is so very lacking in enough vital nutrients, but full of foods that will speed up aging and encourage much more suffering. Though this diet will not guarantee diabetes, it will certainly increase your chances of getting diabetes, regardless of our close family members.

However, with close family members with diabetes and that lifestyle the chances are very high. A self-fulfilling prophesy. You inherit genes but you also inherit habits. Born in Japan you might have acquired a taste for raw fish, born in America you might have acquired a taste for doughnuts. That is not genes but acquired taste and habits.

When we think of aging, we think of it involving some degree of physical and mental decline, however there are many people who maintain comparatively full physical and mental health throughout a very long life. A healthy life depends on many aspects, a person's constitution, their family or society, their past lifestyle, whether they are lonely or fulfilled. Whether they smoke or drink too much. Diet plays a huge part of our physical and mental well-being, but it is not the only aspect we need to consider. Too much research has been done to ignore the facts - aging can be a very pleasant experience. They can be the best years of your life. There is a huge amount to look forward to.

I recently came across a 55 year old man in our clinic with mild diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, poor digestion, heartburn, overweight, but for him the biggest worry was that he had been refused further medical insurance (he was from the US) due to his state of health, the amount of surgery he'd already had and the large amounts of medication he was taking. The condition this man was in is pretty typical in our Western society.

On the other hand there is a 64 year old who visits the clinic for acupuncture as part of his maintenance program, has none of these problems is taking no medication what so ever, is not over weight and is extremely fit, still riding a bike for many miles up and down the mountains around here. I don't except you to buy a mountain bike for one moment, I am just pointing out that anything is possible you can choose your path, way to go, so to speak. The first man has all the conditions that have been proven to be self inflicted by the life-style he chose, and that these conditions can improve or even reverse with the right choices.

Incidentally, the first man has made vast improvements in many areas since treatment, lifestyles changes and supplements. His recent blood tests have revealed - bad cholesterol down, triglycerides down, blood pressure down and weight down, medication down. He is a different man.

We are all at great risk of not getting adequate nutrients due to refining and processing of food but even more so as we get older, due to the decline in our digestive function. As fewer calories are needed due to a reduction in general activity, and for some appetite declines, which may be in part due to changes in taste and smell. As we get older we can often lose our sense of thirst, so dehydration is more likely. Our digestive system starts to cause us a problem, having been so abused for years. The stomach slows down its production of digestive juices and enzymes this in turn affects absorption of B12, iron and calcium to name just a few. There is a reduction in lactase production, which causes milk intolerance.

Constipation is often a problem as we get older, as more fibre is needed compared to our younger days. Medication can change the way food tastes, cause nausea or the way the bowel works. For some of us just having to eat alone can put us off bothering to cook and eat well. Smoking robes the body of large amounts of vital nutrients. Nutrients that are needed to repair joint 'wear and tear' or maintain healthy bones or even teeth, the list is endless. Try not to drink too much, more than a small amount of alcohol can have a negative effect on your general health and well being. Are your tests showing - high blood pressure and high levels of cholesterol, are the scales screaming out "you are overweight" but you knew this before you got on the scales, because your 'lower front' was causing your 'lower back' a problem! They are telling you that you are now prone to diabetes. That the menopause is a disease! What does that make puberty? That osteoporosis is only a matter of time. Prostate cancer, no man gets away with it! That incontinence pads are for life! And soon you will be battling with false teeth!

In our culture we hear of people after a certain age (but now happening at a younger age than before) suffering diabetes or stroke or arthritis or heart disease and hardly batter an eye lid. Yet if we lived in a more traditional society these diseases would be rare at any age, but very rare at as young an age as we are now suffering these now, they would be quite a talking point. For instance, women who eat a traditional diet in Japan hardly ever suffer osteoporosis and few menopause symptoms. Yet the modern Japan woman who lives on a typical western diet suffers osteoporosis and the usual symptoms of menopause! This is not genes.

We need to look at the facts - a speedy decline is not inevitable. There is so much research that proves things can be different, that your life can be different. That your life can be so much better, you can be healthier, happier, slimmer, and more active late into your life. Do not be brain-washed by the advertising companies, by the lure of the addictive ingredients sitting on the supermarket shelves that are aging you.

Think positively, as it is never too early or too late to start an anti-aging program.

Edo furnishings gets their name from a period of classical Japanese culture that flourished in the area of Kyoto, the ancient capital of Japan between 1500 and 1780 AD. Kyoto was a beautiful city with cherry tree lined avenues, and a highly developed appreciation of the arts. The area surrounding Kyoto was heavily wooded, and carpentry was a highly respected craft. Thousands of carpenters from the area were used to build the wooden castles and palaces of the country's rulers, and they also made furniture that was typical of the art of the area and time.

It was characterized by understatement, simplicity, and restrained elegance. It was very much influenced by Zen and the harmony of nature. Much of the pieces were crafted from fine mahogany and beech. The beech tree made up the majority of the workable wood in the area, and was used frequently.

After the isolated culture of Japan came into contact with Western Culture, some of the western ideas began to find their way into the Edo furniture pieces. It was a remarkable melding of the two cultures. The older pieces tended to have little curvature in their design, but due to the western influence this began to creep into the designs. The basic English chest of drawers that was little known in Japan became a popular piece and a favorite of the Edo craftsmen.

After World War II, it was the Western World that discovered Edo furnishings. It was noticed first by servicemen in the Occupation Forces, who often brought pieces back home with them. In the industrial rebuilding of Japan following the war many of the original craftsman, who had been producing the classical furniture pieces one at a time in their little shops, were replaced by modern factories. The beauty and the elegance of the look was retained in most cases, and the secrets of the craft were transferred to the new designers.

In the West, Edo furnishings are often used as a room theme. Bedrooms are especially popular. The Bedroom was always considered the most important room in Japanese culture, and still plays a more important role in modern Japanese home design than is usual in the West. The result is that Edo beds and bedroom furniture represent some of the most popular and finely crafted examples of the Edo theme. It has been found that Edo pieces do not necessarily have to constitute the entire theme of a room, but rather they blend nicely with other types of furniture.

Resort jobs in Japan are available all year-round. Depending on the season, you can choose to work in Ski or Summer (Beach, Golf, or Mountain) Resorts. Here are some details about what Resort life is really like:

Accommodation

You'll be staying in large dormitories, with rooms for 2-4 Japanese or foreign staff. It's rare to have a dorm room to yourself. Resorts sometimes place foreign and Japanese staff together in rooms, as it's a great way to make friends and learn the language. However, due to some unfortunate incidents with foreign staff in the past (messy, noisy, etc.), foreign staff are often placed together.

All dormitories are single-sex, and some have a curfew. Male and female dormitories are strictly separated. Entering dorm rooms of the opposite sex can be grounds for dismissal. However, most dorms have common rooms where everyone can socialize. In cases where no common rooms are available, staff usually hang out in the dining room / nearby bars / restaurants etc.

Dorm accommodation is simple but adequate - a working holiday in Japan isn't supposed to be luxurious - just fun! Some rooms are western-style, while others are fitted with Tatami (Japanese-style straw mats). All laundry, bathing, and dining facilities are communal. Dorms are equipped with beds, futons, sheets, blankets, 'Rice Pillows' (like a bean-bag), washing machines, microwave ovens, toasters, hot pots (to boil water) and telephones (to receive calls only). Ski Resort dorms also have central heating (or room heaters), so there's no need to bring extra sleeping-bags / blankets with you. Refrigerators are not essential because there are plenty of cool places to store food. On the other hand, Summer Resort dorms are equipped with refrigerators and air-conditioning. In most Resorts, dormitory common rooms (used by all staff to chat and relax) are equipped with a TV, however TV's in individual rooms is a rarity. Of course, drying rooms for gear are standard. Irons are not available - bring clothes that don't need ironing.

Meals

Breakfast and dinner are served in the dorm or hotel cafeteria, while lunch is eaten at your work post. Usually, you'll be eating breakfast at 7-7.30am, lunch at 1-2pm, and dinner after work at 6-7pm. In busy periods, you may find yourself eating hastily from a lunch-box at your post - but after the busy period, your lunch-break will be long enough to enjoy your meal.

Meals are simple, healthy Japanese-style dishes - nothing fancy, but nutritious and satisfying. During your working holiday at Resorts, you might grow tired of Japanese food every day, and decide to eat out with your friends, or buy some food from the supermarket/convenience store instead. PLEASE NOTE: Resorts can't cater to specific dietary needs (vegetarian, diabetic etc). If you're particular about your diet, you'll need to buy your own food each day (as staff aren't permitted to use dorm kitchen facilities to prepare their own food).

Free Time

Doing a working holiday at a Resort in Japan, you'll be surrounded by beautiful scenery, and lots of fun activities! Carving fresh tracks in champagne powder, lazing on tropical beaches in the sun, or hiking through pristine wilderness will all become routine activities. On your days off, and before / after work, you'll be free to do as you please (within resort guidelines). In some Ski resorts, you'll also have the opportunity to do night-skiing / boarding after work.

Expenses

As Accommodation and a Season Ski-pass for your Resort are completely FREE, your only expenses will be for food and leisure / daily activities (ie. ski equipment, eating out, toiletries etc).

*IMPORTANT* RURAL LIVING

Please bear in mind that working at a Resort in Japan will mean you'll be in a rural area - thus, the luxuries of the city are not as easily accessible. On your days-off, you may have to travel on a train/bus for internet access, international phones, supermarkets, etc. Your Resort may be located quite far from the nearest village, so there won't be many bars / restaurants / shops like you're used to back home. In the quiet season, most of the bars etc. will be empty, so you may find there's not much more to do than swim/ski/board/hike, or hang out with your friends after work. It's quite common for staff to feel a little lonely/bored in the 1st month, until they settle in and make friends with all the locals! Please try to remember this is all part of the fun, and heightens the sense of immersion into Japanese society. It's important that you come with an open mind, and embrace the fact that you are far away from the "big smoke". In Resort areas, the natural beauty, the outdoor activities, and the friends you make become the biggest source of enjoyment!

In the beginning, you may feel a little isolated if you're unable to contact friends / family as much as you'd like - this is completely natural. We hope you can accept that contact will be less frequent, and try to immerse yourself in the Japanese culture as much as possible during your time here. Making new (Japanese!) friends at your resort will make your transition much more comfortable. It's natural for Foreign Resort Staff to become close, because most of them are English speakers, and can communicate freely. However, it's very important that you challenge yourself, and make local Japanese friends too - that way, you'll learn so much more about the culture, have much more fun, and your Japanese will skyrocket! After a few weeks, Resort Staff are usually having so much fun on and off the job, they forget to contact their parents at all!

If you really can't live without daily contact, you may like to bring a laptop with a wireless LAN card (if you have one), as there are often wireless access points around. Some of you may also wish to purchase mobile phones (which have internet connections).

Taking Trips

Many of you may wish to travel to the big cities on the weekends. However, they're the busiest time for resorts, so your days-off will always fall on weekdays. In addition, you may not always have two consecutive days-off at a time, so it's best to explore Japan at your own leisure before or after your Resort work experience.

Engakuji is one of the leading Zen temples in Eastern Japan and the number two of Kamakura's five great Zen temples. Engakuji was founded by the ruling regent Hojo Tokimune in the year 1282, one year after the second invasion attempt by the Mongols had been reverted. You can expect the Japanese to be extremely polite as it's something they're well known for. Many Japanese citizens are thrilled to see foreigners in their country and are often willing to help them out. Many of the younger generation love to meet foreigners and have the opportunity to befriend them. Don't be surprised if someone, usually of the opposite sex, approaches you and tries to start up a conversation with you in broken English!

The people of Japan are very understanding of foreigners and will often forgive you for common foul ups on their Japanese traditions. It's important to understand, though, there are a few things that will always be looked down upon and to make note. You want to be sure never to walk on a tatami mat if you are wearing shoes or slippers. Never blow your nose in public. Don't ever leave your chopsticks standing up in your bowl of rice because this is how it's offered to the dead. And above all, make sure you wash your hands before bathing. Do some deeper research and learn more about Japanese culture to make your stay that much more enjoyable. But above all, have fun! Japan is a beautiful country.

the image of the cover of the January issue of the monthly Shogakukan's Ikki that a television anime adaptation of the 2010 House of Ono Natsume five sheets (Sarai-ya Goyou) manga has been green light. The anime will run during popular Noitamina Fuji TV late night hours. Viz Media has been issuing the shares of this manga in English on its website SigIkki since last May.

The manga follows the life of the Chamber of the five members of the band leaves in Edo era Japan during the height of the rule of the Shogun. In particular, masterless samurai (ronin) Akitsu Masanosuke is desperate for a job after letting go of one after another, sir, for your ingenuity. It becomes the bodyguard of the House of Yaichi charismatic leader of five sheets of gangs and discovers there is more to the band leader of criminal activity would suggest. The manga has been runnning since 2005, and six volumes have been published in Japan.

Ono also created the manga that inspired the anime Ristorante Paradiso. As the home of five sheets, anime Ristorante Paradiso was also presented in the time slot Noitamina. Viz is publishing manga Ono Ristorante Paradiso in March. Crunchyroll has been to anime streaming Ristorante Paradiso.
